Yesterday, I brought you this report on a brand new “personal air vehicle” that you can buy for as low as $128,000.
In Case You Missed It:
Meet the Jetson One, your personal aerial vehicle for only $128,000
Today it looks like Elon Musk has decided to move forward…significantly.
Elon went on Joe Rogan (always watching Appointments) and dropped a bomb, essentially claiming that the new Tesla Roadster can fly.
In typical Elon fashion, he’s the master showman, giving PT Barnum a run for his money! Elon teases that Peter Thiel once complained to him that we don’t have flying cars yet, so Elon says if Peter Thiel wants a flying car then we should probably give it to him.
Delightful!
Joe Rogan’s eyes were practically bugging out of his head as he desperately tried to get more details, but Elon wasn’t saying much other than saying that the product demo would be unforgettable — then noting that it would either be unforgettable for good or unforgettable for bad, adding that it could go either way.
He then said he believes it has a chance to be the most memorable product unveiling ever, and it stands up against things like Steve Jobs unveiling the iPhone or do you remember all the hype around the Segway when it was first unveiled?
Anyway, look here:
Transcript:
Elon Musk: Quite sick. Yes. Are you still doing the roadster?
Interviewer: Yes. Ultimately?
Elon Musk: Umm… we’re getting closer to demoing the prototype.
Interviewer: Like, how close?
Elon Musk: And I think it will be—the one thing I can guarantee is that this product demo will be unforgettable. Unforgettable.
Interviewer: how come?
Elon Musk: Whether it’s good or bad, it will be unforgettable.
Interviewer: Can you tell more? what do you mean?
Elon Musk: Well, you know my friend Peter Thiel, you know, he once thought that there would be flying cars in the future, but we don’t have flying cars.
Interviewer: So can you fly?
Elon Musk: Well, I mean, I think if Peter wants a flying car, he should be able to buy one.
Interviewer: So are you actively considering building an electric flying car? Is it like the real thing?
Elon Musk: Well, we’ll have to see.
Interviewer: In the demo?
Elon Musk: So when you do this, will you have a retractable wing? What is the idea behind this?
Interviewer: Don’t be sneaky. come on. Tell us.
Elon Musk: I can’t—uh, I can’t unveil before the unveiling.
Interviewer: Then tell me off-air.
Elon Musk: I—it—look, I think this has the chance to be the most memorable product unveiling ever. There’s a shot in this.
Interviewer: And when are you planning to do so? What is the goal?
Elon Musk: Hopefully before the end of the year.
Interviewer: In fact?
Elon Musk: Yes.
Interviewer: Before the end of this year? This is, I mean, we’re almost-
Elon Musk: Yes, like in a few months. Hopefully in a few months.
Elon Musk: You know, we have to make sure it works. Like, this is some crazy, crazy technology that we’ve got in this car. Crazy technology.
Interviewer: Crazy crazy. quite different-
Elon Musk: Yes.
Interviewer: —What was announced earlier?
Elon Musk: Yes.
Interviewer: And is that why you haven’t released it yet, because you keep messing with it?
Elon Musk: It has amazing technology.
Interviewer: Okay, like—is this even a car?
Elon Musk: I’m not sure it looks like a car. But let’s put it this way—it’s crazier than anything James Bond has ever done. If you took all the James Bond cars and combined them, it’s even crazier.
Interviewer: very exciting.
Elon Musk: Yes.
Interviewer: I don’t know what to think about it because—is it even a car? I don’t know. I am getting limited amount of information from here.
Interviewer: Jaime is very suspicious there. Look at him-excited.
Jaime: I am interested.
Elon Musk: It’s still going to be the same—well, you know what? I mean, if you want to come a little before the unveiling, I can show it to you.
Interviewer: 100%.
Elon Musk: Yes sure.
Interviewer: Yes.
Elon Musk: Yes.
Interviewer: let’s go.
Elon Musk: Yes.

Okay, my take?
If I’m reading between the lines here, I think that’s what’s going on….
Elon has previously said that the new Roadster will be a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX and I believe he even said that there will be some kind of rocket-boost attached to the back of the car that will literally propel and propel the car forward.
He says Tesla has already reached the limits of how much acceleration you can get when you’re limited by the grip of rubber on the road, so the Model S will need a rocket-boost from the rear to go faster than the plaid.
So where does flight fit in?
Well, I wonder if the rocket-boost is so powerful that it will literally lift the car off the pavement, at least temporarily…
That’s my guess.
It sounds very unsafe, but it is also very good! I want one!!!
We will see the upcoming Tesla Roadster demo soon, and I personally can’t wait!
And if you want to watch the full interview (because who doesn’t?) I have it right here for you.
