Elon Musk asks Apple for help in Tesla crash lawsuit – details

By | Published | No Comments

Tesla is turning to Apple for help in a fierce lawsuit over the safety of its Autopilot system. The case stems from a fatal crash involving a Tesla Model X in 2018, triggering a legal dispute over the circumstances of the accident.

The incident occurred when the car, operating in self-driving mode, collided with a safety barrier on U.S. Highway 101 in Mountain View, California, killing former Apple engineer Wei “Walter” Huang.Huang’s family reportedly filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Tesla, claiming that Autopilot technology was defective and caused the incident 9to5mac.

Tesla, on the other hand, claimed that Huang was distracted by his iPhone while driving and was specifically playing games at the time of the accident. However, data retrieved from Huang’s phone by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) did not determine whether he was actively using it at the time of the disaster.

Tesla now aims to bolster its case by enlisting the help of Huang’s former employer, Apple. The electric car maker hopes to use Apple’s data analysis to prove Huang was using his iPhone at the time of the fatal incident.

According to court documents, Tesla obtained a sworn statement from Apple engineering manager James Harding, who examined telemetry data from Huang’s phone. Harding’s investigation revealed there may have been some user contact during the incident, such as touching the screen or pressing a button.

However, disagreements have arisen between Tesla and Apple over the sharing of sensitive information. Although Tesla seeks to strengthen cooperation with Apple, the technology giant has refused to disclose any information, citing concerns about the leakage of confidential materials.

The upcoming trial, set to begin next week in San Jose, is expected to delve into liability issues in crashes involving self-driving technology. The results of the study, expected to last two months, could have far-reaching implications for the future development and regulation of such complex vehicle technology.

Tesla’s request for evidence from Apple underscores the complexity of the legal battle over the Autopilot disaster and highlights concerns about liability and responsibility in the self-driving car world.
