Electricution Deaths: Calcutta HC allows Suvendu Officer to conduct protest rally on Durga Puja Carnival Day

Kolkata, 3 October (IANS) A holiday bench of the Calcutta High Court, on Friday, allowed the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Officer to conduct a protest rally in Central Kolkata on 5 October when the city was surrounded by heavy rains.

Death occurred after coming in contact with electric wires submerged in rain water. An organization close to the BJP decided to conduct a protest rally by Suwardu officer on 5 October.

However, the Kolkata Police denied permission on the basis that the same evening, a mega Durga Puja Carnival in Red Road will also be attended by 113 award winning community Durga Puja committees in the city in Central Kolkata. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will also attend this program.

The organization then approached the Calcutta High Court for permission.

The case came on Friday afternoon to hear the bench of the Calcutta High Court Justice Biswarup Chaudhary, and at the end of the hearing, the court on 5 October gave a conditional approval to the organization to conduct a protest rally.

Justice Chaudhary noticed that since the deaths of so many people were very unfortunate, permission would be given for the rally.

However, the Vacation Bench fixed the time of the protest rally between 2 pm and 5 pm, given that the same evening there would be a carnival and that too near the site of the protest rally,

The bench of the holiday also said that the number of participants in the rally should not exceed 3,000. The said organization said in its petition that there will be 5,000 participants in the rally.
