Eight men have been arrested and one person has been charged following Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Supporters were arrested on suspicion of a range of offences, including suspected possession of class A drugs, suspicion of causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress through chanting, and a serious racial public order offence.
Chief Inspector Jamie Collins, silver medalist for the match, said: “I would like to thank the vast majority of fans who turned out to watch this intense match until the very end.
“Thanks also to all the officials and partners involved in yesterday’s operation who contributed to what was a fantastic FA Cup match.
“The arrests are the result of our proactive, zero-tolerance approach to ensuring genuine supporters and spectators can enjoy the game safely.
“greater manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that a 21-year-old man had been arrested for shouting tragic slogans. Incidents of tragedy will not be tolerated and will be dealt with severely. “
He added: “We held a supporters group meeting with both groups of fans before the game and both sides agreed that chanting tragic slogans was completely unacceptable. GMP will crack down on this behavior and arrest those who engage in it People, no matter which team they support.
“We are also aware of a video circulating on social media of a Manchester United fan chanting tragic slogans. No arrests have been made but GMP are working with both clubs to identify individuals involved in the incident.
“I hope these arrests will act as a deterrent to anyone attending future competitions.”
