The Election Commission published the final voter list for Bihar Assembly elections on September 30, this list includes 7.42 crore voters as eligible voters, who will exercise their franchise in the upcoming elections.
The publication of the ‘clean’ voter list sparked a wave of protest from the opposition, which objected to the entire SIR process and alleged that the names of many legitimate voters were removed from the list.
To address this, the ECI ordered that in case of inclusion or deletion of any name, or any discrepancy, an appeal should be made to the concerned District Magistrates. However, after nine days, no appeal has been received from any district, the Bihar CEC said on Friday.
The election body published the final draft voter list on 30 September. A total of 7,41,92,357 voters were listed in the final voter list.
The Election Commission had started the voter verification process in June. Before this process, there were 7.89 crore voters in Bihar. After revision, names of a total of 65 lakh voters were removed and they were given a time limit of 30 days to file claims and objections.
Earlier in the day, the ECI had issued a note stating that people whose names are in the voters list can produce any one of the 12 alternative photo identity cards other than the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) to exercise their franchise. The poll panel further reiterated that to be able to cast a vote, it is mandatory for the person’s name to be in the electoral roll.
