Lima:
A Peru-based court on Tuesday sentenced former President Olanta Humala and his wife to 15 years in jail, which was associated with the globe-spanning corruption scam, in which Brazilian construction group Odbrect bribed politicians.
The court found 62 -year -old and his wife Nadin Hardia guilty of money laundering for getting illegal contribution from Odibrech and Venezuela government in two presidential operations.
After the ruling, Humla was taken into custody in court, and Judge Nayo Coronado ordered the arrest of Heredia, who did not attend the sentence.
Heredia later sought asylum at the Brazilian Embassy in Lima.
Former Army Officer Humla, who led the country from 2011 to 2016, became the first President of Peru to be tested in the Odibrect corruption scam in 2022, in which three other former presidents have also been implicated.
Two-Term Leader Alan Garcia committed suicide in 2019 when the police came to his house to arrest him, while Alejandro Toledo (from 2001 to 2006) was sentenced to more than 20 years in jail last year for accepting a bribe of multi-million dollars in exchange for government contracts.
The investigation continues in the fourth former President, who was implicated, Pedro Pablo Kukzinski (in the office from 2016 to 2018).
The prosecutors had demanded a 20 -year prison sentence for Humala and 26 years for Heredia, which was to accept $ 3 million in an illegal contribution to his 2011 campaign from Odbrect.
The company is considered responsible for one of the largest foreign bribery schemes in history.

He has consistently denied all the allegations, and Humla’s legal team said he would appeal for punishment.
The Brazilian External Affairs Ministry said that Hardia had sought diplomatic refuge in their embassy on Tuesday, and the two governments “were in constant communication about this situation.”
In 2016, Odebrech agreed to pay $ 3.5 billion in a fine in Brazil, arising out of paying over $ 788 million to foreign leaders and government officials to win the United States and Switzerland infrastructure projects.
The company paid at least $ 29 million in bribe to Perui officials between 2005 and 2014.
Left Humla came to the presidential post in 2011 after defeating right -wing candidate Kiko Phujimori in an run -up election.
Fujimori spent 16 months in pre-trial custody in a case associated with Odibrech.
