Earthquake of 2.9 magnitude recorded in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district

According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC), an earthquake of 2.9 magnitude was recorded in Vijayapura district on Wednesday, October 22.

It said there is no need for the community to panic as both the incidence and intensity observed are low.

The earthquake occurred at 07:43:38 am and the epicenter was at a depth of 5 km, 2.5 km north-west of Hattarkihal village in Yaranal gram panchayat of Basavana Bagewadi taluk of Vijayapura district, KSNDMC said in a statement.

“As per the earthquake intensity map from the epicenter, the observed intensity is low and tremors would have been felt up to a radial distance of 50-60 km from the epicenter,” it said.

This type of earthquake will not cause any harm to the local community, as the intensity observed is low; Although tremors can be felt locally, it is further said that the epicenter of the earthquake falls in seismic zone III and as per the tectonic map this zone is devoid of any structural discontinuity.
