Bhubaneswar, Oct 12 (IANS) A team of the Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) may soon visit West Bengal to check the health condition of a medical student who was allegedly gang-raped by unidentified miscreants in Durgapur area of the neighboring state.

Addressing media persons during a press conference here on Sunday, OSCW President Sovana Mohanty said, “I am planning to visit West Bengal with other OSCW members to inquire about the health condition of the victim and whether she is getting the necessary medical treatment. The health condition of the victim is improving. We have also discussed the issue with members of the State Women’s Commission of West Bengal.”

Mohanty also informed that OSCW has written a letter to the West Bengal Women Commission and police authorities, seeking their intervention in the matter.

The OSCW president said he is in touch with the district administration team in Balasore, where the girl hails from.

He said that what happened to the girl from Odisha in Durgapur, West Bengal is a gruesome, condemnable and painful incident.

Mohanty also told the journalists that the Odisha government has written a letter urging the West Bengal government to take immediate strict action in this regard and ensure that all the culprits of this heinous act get the harshest punishment.

The Odisha government has also spoken to the family members of the victim and is ensuring that the victim receives all necessary medical care.

The Odisha Women Commission chairperson also criticized the West Bengal government over the “poor” law and order situation in the neighboring state.

“People from the minority community are involved in the brutal gang rape of the Odisha girl,” he said.

Police on Sunday arrested three people in connection with the gang rape of a second-year medical student of a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur in West Burdwan district.

However, the police have not disclosed the names of the arrested people and have said that the remaining accused will also be arrested soon.

According to the police, the student had come out of the campus for dinner with a male friend on Friday night when a group of youths riding motorcycles started following them and making lewd comments. The men allegedly chased the friend, dragged the student to a wooded area behind the campus and gang-raped her.

They also snatched away his mobile phone and threw it away. The male friend returned from the college along with others and found the injured student on the ground. He was admitted to a local hospital.

Police confirmed that she was a resident of Jaleshwar in Odisha.
