New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS) A major political controversy erupted on Thursday after West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose submitted a detailed report to President Draupadi Murmu and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on the alleged gang rape of a Dalit medical student in Durgapur.
The move was criticized by the opposition as Congress and Samajwadi Party accused the Center and governors of showing “selective activism” in states ruled by non-BJP parties.
A Raj Bhavan insider confirmed that the Governor’s report included his comments from his recent visit to Durgapur, where he met the victim’s family, although specific details of the report are unknown.
Congress leader Udit Raj alleged “step-motherly treatment” towards opposition-ruled states.
Speaking to IANS, he said, “Why was this not done in Odisha? Their government is in power there and two such heinous crimes against girls took place there. The Governor there showed no promptness. Such steps are taken only where the opposition is in power. A crime has indeed been committed, but is the opposition given step-motherly treatment in a democracy?”
Congress MP Imran Masood also supported the statement and told IANS, “The same thing should be done in other states also. Why is only the West Bengal governor so active? What about rape cases in BJP-ruled states?”
Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput said that if governors in BJP-ruled states had been as active as those in opposition-led states, the situation would have been “very different”.
Speaking to IANS, he said, “Anandiben Patel of Uttar Pradesh should wake up from her slumber. According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of crimes against women. She could have presented a report on this issue. Also, the Haryana Governor should have presented a report regarding the suicide case involving an IPS officer and the Madhya Pradesh government should have presented a report on their plight.” Farmers in the state.”
“The BJP is using its governors to target non-BJP ruled states. This is an attack on the federal structure of the country,” he said. Samajwadi Party also accused the Center of political bias. Party leader Azam Khan questioned the inaction of Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel in similar matters.
He said, “In Bengal, the Governor becomes very serious and active because Trinamool is in power there. However, if a similar case happens in Uttar Pradesh, our Governor does not care. Just a few days ago, a gang rape took place in Lucknow – what action was taken? The BJP only sees crime in Bengal, not in the states ruled by it.”
The incident, which took place on the night of October 10, involved a second-year student from Odisha enrolled at a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur.
According to initial reports, the victim was attacked after she stepped out of the college campus to buy food at around 8 pm. She was allegedly dragged to a nearby forest area and gang-raped.
