Kolkata, Oct 11 (IANS) A delegation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Saturday met a second-year medical student from Odisha, who was gang-raped outside a private medical college where she was studying on Friday night in Durgapur in West Bengal’s West Burdwan district.
The victim girl is currently undergoing treatment in a local hospital in Durgapur. NCW member Archana Majumdar, who led the commission’s delegation, visited the hospital and met the victim.
However, at the time of filing the report, Majumdar had not given any statement to the media on this issue.
Meanwhile, local BJP supporters led by party MLA from Durgapur (West) constituency Laxman Chandra Ghorui protested in front of Durgapur New Township Police Station demanding immediate identification of the accused in the case.
While police have already detained a friend of the victim for questioning in the case, investigating officials are yet to reveal his identity. However, BJP’s information technology cell chief and party’s central observer for West Bengal Amit Malviya claimed in a social media post on Saturday that a complaint has been filed against one person, Wasif Ali, and his associates in this case.
Meanwhile, Abhishek Gupta, deputy commissioner (east) of Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate, under whose jurisdiction the private medical college falls, told media persons that since the matter was sensitive, the police was investigating keeping in mind the sensitivity associated with the matter.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father has claimed that his daughter’s batch-mate, who has been detained for questioning, was the mastermind behind the gang rape. According to him, the accused person he is referring to was misleading his daughter to go to a secluded place outside the medical college campus, where the crime was committed against her.
The victim’s father also claimed that the accused snatched Rs 5,000 and a mobile phone from his daughter.
Earlier, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the victim’s father and assured him of all possible cooperation in the case, especially regarding the treatment of the victim.
