Kolkata, Oct 11 (IANS) Extending “full support” to the girl student who was allegedly gang-raped outside its campus in West Bengal’s Durgapur on Friday night, the private medical college and hospital said it will also cooperate fully with the police.
In a statement issued on Saturday, college officials said, “It is with deep concern and sorrow that we must inform the public about the extremely disturbing incident that happened with two of our MBBS second year students.”
“Last evening, at around 7:58 pm, both the students went out of the campus for dinner. One of them returned at 8:42 pm, but after wandering around the main exit area for about 5-6 minutes, she went out again at around 8:48 pm. Both of them then returned together at 9:29 pm. The female student proceeded towards the girls hostel at around 9:31 pm,” the statement said.
According to college officials, after the incident came to light, the student was immediately rushed to the hospital and admitted for medical care. The local police was duly alerted.
“We wish to strongly state that the institution stands firmly with the affected student and her partner. We offer them our full support and are committed to diligently pursuing justice. Our key priorities at this time are: Protecting the well-being of the affected student – ensuring that she not only receives medical care, but also psychological counselling.”
Officials added, “Full cooperation with law enforcement – we are committed to providing all relevant evidence requested by authorities. We will keep students, parents, staff and the public appropriately informed, while maintaining transparent, responsible communications – while respecting legal boundaries and confidentiality.”
“We deeply understand the seriousness of this incident and our thoughts are with the student and her family at this difficult time. We pledge to stand with them and work tirelessly with authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” the college said in a statement.
The reaction from medical college and hospital authorities comes after a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped outside the campus in Durgapur in West Burdwan district.
West Bengal Police on Saturday detained the student’s friend and is interrogating him to know more about the incident. Meanwhile, the state health department has sought reports from private medical college authorities.
According to the police, the student had come out of the campus for dinner with a male friend on Friday night when a group of youths riding motorcycles started following them and making lewd comments.
The men allegedly chased the friend, dragged the student to a wooded area behind the campus and gang-raped her. They also snatched away his mobile phone and threw it away.
The male friend returned from the college along with others and found the injured student on the ground. He was admitted to a local hospital. Police confirmed that she was a resident of Jaleshwar in Odisha.
Following the complaint lodged by the college, the Durgapur New Township police had to launch an investigation, but no arrests have been made so far.
