Kolkata, Oct 13 (IANS) Police have found contradictions in the statement of a medical student’s male friend, with whom she had gone out before she was gang-raped by five men in a forest area near her college in West Bengal’s Durgapur on October 10.
The male friend is still in police custody as officials interrogate him as part of their investigation into the gang rape case.
Some of his actions that night raised suspicion in the minds of investigators
According to police sources, based on the complaint of the medical student, it was found that the incident took place between 8 pm and 8.45 pm. First of all three people surrounded the girl. When the girl tried to inform her college friends about this, her phone was snatched away. Later two more people came. A total of five people were involved in the incident.
It is alleged that the accused later asked the girl to return her phone in exchange for Rs 5,000. According to investigators, the student’s male friend escaped after five men surrounded the girl.
The victim’s father questioned the role of the male friend in abandoning his daughter at the time of distress.
He also submitted a complaint to the police in this regard. He claimed that his classmate was also involved in the entire incident.
According to a source, the way the male friend ran away after seeing the student in danger has raised many questions. Not only this, investigators are wondering whether he could have called other friends from the college to save the student. Some investigators also have questions in their minds as to why they did not do so. “The investigation is ongoing. We are probing all possible angles,” said a senior official of the Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate.
On Friday, a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped outside the campus in Durgapur when she had gone out for dinner with her male friend.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. A complaint has been lodged against five people at Durgapur New Township Police.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested one more person in the gang rape case, taking the total number of arrests to four.
