Tokyo, Japan:

Akira Toriyama, the creator of Japan’s popular “Dragon Ball” manga and animated manga, has died at the age of 68, his production team said on Friday.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1 due to acute subdural hematoma,” said a statement posted on the Dragon Ball series’ official X account.

“We deeply regret that he still has several works that he is creating with great enthusiasm,” a statement from Toriyama Tori Studio said.

“He had much more to do. However, he left the world many comics and works of art,” it added.

“We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique creative world continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.”

Dragon Ball is one of the best-selling and most influential comics of all time.

It was first serialized in 1984 and has spawned countless anime series, movies, and video games.

Its protagonist is a boy named Sun Wukong who enhances his powers by collecting magic balls containing dragons to help him and his allies protect the Earth from evil enemies.

Shueisha Publishing House said in a statement that it was “extremely saddened by the news of his sudden death.”

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of major Japanese manga One Piece, said in a statement that Akira Toriyama’s death was “too early” and left “too big a void.”

“The thought that I would never see him again…I was overwhelmed with sadness,” Oda said.

Subdural hematoma is a serious condition in which blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain.
