Dr. Michelle Murti has been appointed as the new medical officer of Toronto’s health.
He serving as a health medical officer from December 17, 2024. Na-Koshi replaces Lampati. Dr. Elene de Villa announced his decision to resign after eight years as the head of Toronto Public Health in May 2024.
Murti is serving as a proclaimed Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ontario from 2021, where he has played an important role in epidemic preparation, emergency response and health system change.
After being confirmed at the meeting of the city council on Wednesday, Mayor Olivia Chow said, “Dr. Murty is a respected public health doctor, with a deep understanding of both local community health and prevention of global disease.” “She brings experience from the World Health Organization, where she contributed to the global outbreak alert reaction network in Geneva.”
“Dr. Muri’s job reflects his stable, evidence-based community-oriented approach to a solution. She understands what it means to build the trust because they have done it again and again, whether working with frontline providers or policy makers.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us, from the preparation of the long -term impact of climate change on public health to the reconstruction of the Community Trust to reduce health inequalities in our neighborhood.
Murthy said in a statement that he is ready to work with the community and the city partners to “protect and improve health, reduce health inequalities and make Toronto a healthy and flexible place where we can all live, work and play.”
The appointment of Murti should still be approved by the Health Minister of Ontario. She is going to take her new role on 3 September.
