Over 200 animals found in a wildlife rehabilitator’s home new york Where officers also found a 95-year-old woman who they say was trapped in her room due to disarray at the residence.
catsThe 206 animals found in the Northport home on October 1 included dogs, parrots, chickens, elephants, chinchillas, guinea pigs, voles and flying squirrels. Describing it as a “hoarding situation”, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said that the residence was infested with insects and filled with debris, garbage and household waste, making some areas impassable.
Officials said the animals were living in cages amid very unsanitary and overcrowded conditions, and many had unsanitary food and water sources. Many have been diagnosed with serious medical problems and are now under veterinary care.
The 57-year-old rehabilitator and the 61-year-old man who lived at the home have been charged with animal cruelty, while the rehabilitator is also accused of endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person. Prosecutors said the 95-year-old woman was evacuated from the home, but did not disclose further details about her condition.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said, “The level of neglect was unconscionable as the animals were in poor conditions and living in filth.”
