Donald Trump wins Republican polls in three US states, putting him on track for nomination

Trump has gained huge momentum in the race for the Republican nomination.

Washington:

Donald Trump made progress on his path to becoming the Republican presidential nominee by winning intra-party elections in Missouri, Michigan and Idaho on Saturday, US media reported.

The former president has now won every state nominating contest heading into next week’s Super Tuesday, when voters in 15 US states will choose their preferred candidate for each party.

Trump has gained significant momentum in the race for the Republican nomination at July’s party convention, with the outcome expected to be all but sealed on Tuesday.

He is likely to face President Joe Biden in the November election, the second time the two have faced off since 2020.

Saturday’s votes in Missouri, Michigan and Idaho were hybrid internal elections with different rules that in some cases reflected divisions and tensions despite Trump’s powerful influence.

In Missouri, Trump defeated his primary opponent, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and won all the state’s county caucuses, the New York Times reported.

Anyone who pledges “allegiance to the Missouri Republican Party” can vote in county caucuses.

In Michigan, about 2,000 party activists voted at the caucus, and Trump won all 39 delegates, CNN reported.

The limited vote comes after turmoil within the party, including allegations of overspending and mismanagement.

Earlier this week, Trump won 16 Michigan delegates in a limited primary election.

The former president also handily won the Republican caucus in western Idaho, according to NBC and ABC projections.

Haley has been crisscrossing the country in the run-up to Super Tuesday, trying to make an increasingly strong case for the inevitability of Trump’s nomination.
