Donald Trump won the North Dakota Republican presidential primary on Monday, adding to his string of victories heading into Super Tuesday.

The former president finished first in a poll of 12 caucus locations, ahead of former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. The result puts Trump back on a winning streak that was briefly interrupted Sunday when Haley scored her first victory of the campaign in the District of Columbia primary.

White House hopefuls are now turning their attention to Super Tuesday, when results roll in in 16 states that will be the largest single-day delegate count for a presidential primary. Trump and Democratic President Joe Biden are leading their campaigns and are expected to win the nomination later this month.

Under North Dakota rules, candidates are eligible to win delegates if they receive at least 20% of the vote. However, the candidate who wins at least 60% of the vote will receive all 29 delegates from the state.

Four candidates are on the ballot, including Trump and Nikki Haley. Other candidates who have received little attention are Florida businessman David Stackelberg and Texas businessman and pastor Ryan Binkley, who recently ended his campaign.

Karen Groninger, a retired music teacher and librarian in Almont, said Monday she voted for Trump, calling him the best choice. The 76-year-old cited Trump’s 2020 speech at the annual March for Life anti-abortion event in Washington, D.C., the first speech by a sitting president, as well as his border policies.

Longtime Republican state Sen. Dick Dever of Bismarck said he voted for Haley but added that she was unlikely to win. “I’ve heard a lot of people say they really like Trump’s policies, but they don’t like the way he’s doing it, and I think he’s gone a little too far,” said the 72-year-old retired factory representative.

Caucus Chairman Robert Harms said caucus voters are encouraged to pay to become party members, but those who don’t want to pay the $50 annual fee are asked to sign a pledge to join the party.

North Dakota is the only state without voter registration. The caucuses follow official state voter identification protocols, such as providing a driver’s license. Voting will be conducted only by in-person and printed ballots, and will be counted by hand.

In 2016, North Dakota delegates helped Trump get the numbers he needed to win the Republican presidential nomination.

He swept North Dakota’s three Electoral College votes in 2016 and 2020, winning about 63% and 65% of the vote, respectively.

As president, Trump visited Bismarck and Mandan in 2017 to discuss tax cuts. In 2018, he campaigned twice in Fargo for then-Congressman Kevin Cramer, successfully defeating Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.

The North Dakota Democratic Party-NPL is holding its presidential primary almost entirely by mail, with mail-in voting from February 20 to March 30 and limited in-person voting for residents of Indian reservations. President Joe Biden, Rep. Dean Phillips and six others voted.

A third party will tally the votes in Fargo on March 30, with results later posted on the party’s website.

Sen. Bernie Sanders won the Democratic caucuses in 2016 and 2020.
