Kolkata, Nov 2 (IANS) Maids, who are allegedly illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, have suddenly started disappearing from parts of a particular district in West Bengal after the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was announced in the state last week.
BJP’s information technology cell chief and party’s central observer for West Bengal Amit Malviya claimed in a social media post on Sunday that following the announcement of the SIR, there have been reports of sudden disappearance of several domestic helps in Birati, Bisharpara and surrounding areas of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
“One such woman, identified as Rahima’s mother, who had worked at Birati for over 25 years, went missing right after the SIR announcement. When locals inquired, they found out – she had fled to Bangladesh!” Malviya said in a social media post, citing a report by a local news channel.
According to him, similar reports of disappearance of domestic helpers have come from different houses in the same district, some of whom had even admitted before leaving that they were returning to Bangladesh and would come back only after things were fine.
Malviya said that this development proves that due to this unusual situation, the vote bank of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is fleeing.
“Just think – for years the CPM and Trinamool governments gave shelter and even political protection to these illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators on Bengal soil. Now, as the SIR process has started, they are packing their bags. Because this time, Mamata Banerjee will not be able to protect them. There is no place for them in India – and certainly not in its voter list,” Malviya said.
The BJP has been claiming from the beginning that the Trinamool Congress is opposing the SIR so strongly because they fear that the names of their dedicated voter bank of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators will be removed from the voter list.
On the other hand, Trinamool Congress claimed that the SIR was a ploy by the BJP and the central government to implement NRC in West Bengal.
Last week, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar announced SIR for 12 Indian states, including West Bengal. The first phase of the three-phased vetting exercise will begin in West Bengal on November 4.
