dolly parton Is talked openly about it Complicated relationship with his early mentor, the country star porter wagner,
The music icon was only 21 when she joined Wagner’s variety television series porter wagner show in 1967, and the pair released a series of duets as well as touring together until 1974. Wagner died of lung cancer in 2007.
I am writing in my new book Star of the Show: My Life on StageParton recalls her excitement at getting the opportunity to replace Wagner’s previous duet partner, Norma Jean.
“He offered me $60,000 a year – but that was worth $1 million to me!” She writes. “That was a lot of money at the time.”
However, as Parton’s career progressed and her name became more established, she began to feel that she was not being fairly compensated for her contributions on her tours with Wagner’s band, The Wagonmasters.
Parton recalls, “As our star rose, Porter made a lot of money and he shared some of the wealth.” “Wagonmasters received bonus checks from time to time, and Porter showered me with gifts. He gave me necklaces, rings, and a Cadillac, and those gifts received a lot of attention in the media.”
She adds: “But despite all this my salary never changed. I kept asking for a raise and I never got a raise. He would buy all these things for me and say, ‘Consider this you got a raise.’ I said, ‘I don’t want a gift.’ I want to buy my own gifts. I want money.”

Although there may have been tension behind the scenes, on stage, Parton says the pair had such natural chemistry that many fans assumed they were in a relationship. Parton was Married to reclusive Carl Dean from 1966 until his death earlier this year. Wagner was married to Ruth Olive Williams from 1946 to 1986.
“Fans would sometimes ask if we were married, and I would usually tell them, ‘Yes, but not to each other!'” Parton writes in her new book. “I loved Porter in my own way, and since it seemed like we were always together and Carl didn’t appear in public very often, my husband was almost like a ghost to fans. His attraction to Porter and me kept people’s tongues wagging, and That’s what happened.”

However, Parton explains that friction between the pair continued to grow, especially when she tried to decide which songs she could perform on stage.
She writes, “Small things like this started causing us a lot of problems.” “I was making my way as an artist, and he was already an established artist. It was his show, but I was trying to grow in the business and develop as an artist myself.
“But trying to lead someone else’s show, when he takes everything as a threat or gets angry if you’re getting more attention than him – what increases is tension. You have to know your own place, so to speak, and my place is where I think I should be. I thought, You are not my director. God is.,
