Iowa-based Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC is recalling four-pound dog biscuits, according to a company announcement shared Wednesday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This recall is due to potential Presence of salmonellaa kind that can cause Common bacterial diseases.

The recall involves four-pound bags of Original Country Vet Biscuits, UPC 899623000463, lot number 40906513, with an expiration date of September 6, 2026.

The recall also includes four-pound bags of Heartland Harvest dog biscuits, which have a UPC of 840227340691. The product’s batch number is 40906513 and its expiration date is September 6, 2026.

The recalled products were sold at multiple retail stores in seven states: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana and Nebraska.

The recall was issued after the FDA’s routine sampling program “revealed the finished product contained bacteria,” according to a report shared by the health organization.

“The company has stopped manufacturing and distributing this batch number while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the cause of the problem,” the FDA report states.

While there have been no reports of illness to date, consumers are urged to discard the recalled dog food immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

As noted in the FDA report, pets infected with salmonella may experience “lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.” Some people only experience “loss of appetite, fever and abdominal pain.” Pets with an infection but otherwise healthy can still infect other animals or humans.

If your pet eats Recalled products and symptoms occur, contact your veterinarian. Pet owners are also urged to wash their hands thoroughly after touching pet food or any surface that comes into contact with pet food to stop the spread of germs.

Salmonella infection can occur in humans within 12 to 72 hours after eating food contaminated by the bacteria, with symptoms “usually lasting four to seven days.” Go to FDA website.

Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. The elderly, children under five and people with weakened immune systems are “more likely to develop serious infections”.

Salmonella is statistically the second leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The organization also noted that each year, 1.35 million people become ill, 420 die, and 26,500 are hospitalized due to salmonella.

Earlier this year, a variety of pet foods were also recalled due to health risks. In October, Wisconsin-based Foodynamics voluntarily recalled certain lots of freeze-dried pet treats under the Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, Kanu Pets and What’s In the Bowl brands. Because salmonella may be present.

Additionally, Minnesota-based Raw Bistro Pet Fare is recalling 3-pound bags of Raw Bistro Dog Fare grass-fed beef entrées and 18-pound cases of Raw Bistro Dog Fare grass-fed beef entrées.
