“Don’t worry, because we’re all still trying to figure out what this actually means,” the site said in its announcement this week.
How did ‘6-7’ come about?
It all seems to be inspired by rapper Skrilla’s 2024 song “Doot Doot (6-7)”.
That song began appearing in TikTok videos with basketball players, including the NBA’s LaMelo Ball, who stands 6 feet 7 inches tall.
Then a boy, now known as “The 6-7 Kid”, shouted the ubiquitous phrase, while another child next to him was waving his hands around. Video Which went viral this year.

So what does ‘6-7’ mean?
No one knows the real answer.
And sometimes it depends on who is on the receiving end of the “6-7”.
There is even debate over how to write “6-7” – is it “6 7” or “six seven?”
According to Dictionary.com, the phrase can mean “so-and-so” or “maybe this, maybe that” when combined with a juggling hand gesture.
Merriam-Webster calls it a “nonsense expression used especially by preteens and teens.”
Some people use it to frustrate adults when they are interrogated.
“It is meaningless, ubiquitous, and redundant. In other words, it has all the hallmarks of brainrot,” said Dictionary.com. “Nonetheless, it remains meaningful to those who use it because it fosters connection.”

Parents and teachers have created their own videos trying to explain this sensation.
Some people give tips on how to keep your children from repeating this throughout the day. Others suggest branching out – even making “6-7” Halloween costumes – so it won’t go waste.
Teachers have banned this. Influential people and child psychologists have tried to understand this.
It has also spread to the NFL as a way to celebrate big plays.
Why is it the word of the year?
Dictionary.com says it looks for words that influence the way we talk to each other and communicate online.
The site studied search engines, headlines, and social media trends to make its selection. It says online searches for “6-7” increased dramatically over the summer, and have not slowed down, increasing sixfold since June.
The site said, “The word of the year isn’t just about popular usage; it reveals the stories we tell about ourselves and how we’ve changed throughout the years.”
