The emails raise further questions about Epstein’s friendship with Britain’s former ambassador to Washington.

In a statement on Friday night, Lord Mandelson offered an “unequivocal” apology to Epstein’s victims for remaining friends with the pedophile financier after his conviction.

He insisted he knew nothing about Epstein’s crimes and “only learned the true truth about him after his death.”

Lord Mandelson said: “I was wrong to believe Epstein after his conviction and to continue to associate with him afterwards. I unequivocally apologize for this to the women and girls who have suffered.”

“I was never responsible or complicit in his crimes. Like others, I learned the true truth about him only after his death. But his victims did know what he was doing. Their voices were not heard, and I’m sorry I was one of those who believed him instead of them.”

Earlier this month, Lord Mandelson told the BBC he was on the “edge” of Epstein’s life in his first major broadcast interview since being sacked by the government.

But emails released in a previous batch of Epstein files show that Lord Mandelson told Epstein to “fight for an early release” shortly before he was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

The day before the disgraced financier was set to go to jail, he reportedly told Epstein, “I think of the world for you.”
