Kolkata, October 27 (IANS) A doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has died under mysterious circumstances. Police gave this information on Monday.
The incident happened on Sunday night. The deceased doctor has been identified as Subhajit Acharya, 37, resident of Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district.
According to police sources, his family claimed that he was mentally disturbed due to work pressure at the government hospital, but they have not yet filed a police complaint regarding Acharya’s death.
However, the police have registered a case of unnatural death and started investigating the matter.
Police said Acharya’s wife Andrilla Roy, who is a medical officer at Basirhat District Hospital, told them that he was fine on Sunday.
At around 10 pm, they had dinner together at their residential flat in Madhyamgram. After that, around midnight, Acharya told his wife that he was feeling unwell and needed immediate treatment. Accordingly, he was taken to a private hospital. But there the doctor declared him dead. The wife told the police that her husband had consumed too much medicine in the night. Apart from this, there was also work pressure in the hospital. He was under a lot of stress and was suffering from depression.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been sent to Barasat Hospital for post-mortem. Police sources said that the exact cause of death will be known only after the procedure.
A senior North 24 Parganas district police officer said, “A case of unnatural death has been registered. Investigation into the case has started. We are probing all possible angles.”
On August 9 last year, the body of a post-graduate trainee was recovered from the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident had created shock waves across the country and beyond, resulting in a widespread and sustained protest movement by doctors, common people and even female members of households. Sanjay Roy, the lone convict, was already sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court, but even after a year, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been unable to complete its investigation on the “larger conspiracy” behind the crime.
