Chennai, Nov 6 (IANS) Following the death of a youth after he fell into an open pit dug for the construction of a bridge in Erode district, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran on Thursday issued a strong statement, terming it as “criminal negligence” of the DMK government.
The victim, identified as Yoganathan of Perundurai, reportedly died after the two-wheeler he was traveling in fell into a deep pit dug for the ongoing bridge work.
The BJP leader described the incident as “shocking and sad” and accused the DMK-led government of gross negligence and disregard for public safety.
Nagenthran said, “I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and pray for the departed soul. The state government should immediately provide adequate compensation to Yoganathan’s family.”
He recalled a similar incident that took place near Dharapuram a few months ago, where a husband and wife lost their lives and their daughter was seriously injured when their two-wheeler fell into a 12-foot deep pit.
“A tragedy of the same nature repeating itself clearly shows the DMK government’s continued indifference towards public safety,” he said.
Nagenthran criticized authorities for “failing” to install safety barricades or warning signs around the construction site, leaving unsuspecting travelers vulnerable to such dangers.
“Leaving excavated sites open without any protective measures is sheer negligence. Is this the model of ‘good governance’ that the ruling party keeps claiming?” he asked.
The BJP leader accused the state administration of failing to provide proper infrastructure like roads and bridges or executing such projects irresponsibly through corrupt practices.
“The government oppresses the public either by not building infrastructure or by implementing it through contractors who compromise safety and quality for commission. In both cases, it is the common man who suffers,” he said.
Concluding his statement, Naginthran remarked that what the ruling party calls a “golden regime” is actually a “killer regime”.
“This is not a government of welfare and progress, but a government marked by death and negligence,” he alleged, demanding accountability and immediate remedial action from Chief Minister MK Stalin.
