Raipur, Oct 15 (IANS) In a significant development in the fight against left-wing extremism, female Maoist commander Geeta alias Kamli Salam, active in Kondagaon district, surrendered before the police on Wednesday.
Geeta, who holds the post of Taylor Team Commander in East Bastar division, laid down her arms before Superintendent of Police Y Akshay Kumar, marking a symbolic change in the militancy scenario of the region.
The Chhattisgarh government had earlier announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh on Geeta, underscoring his prominence within the Maoist ranks. His surrender is being seen as the result of several converging factors, including intensified anti-Naxal operations, internal strife within the organization and the recent surrender of several senior leaders.
According to police sources, these developments played an important role in Geeta’s decision to leave the path of violence and return to the mainstream.
Upon surrendering, Geeta was given an immediate incentive of Rs 50,000 under the “Chhattisgarh Naxalism Eradication Policy”.
She will also be eligible for further benefits under the state’s rehabilitation scheme, which aims to reintegrate former rebels into society through financial assistance, vocational training and social assistance.
Officials confirmed that the process of expanding these facilities is currently underway.
Geeta’s surrender is being seen as a morale boost for security forces and a possible catalyst for more Maoist defection.
Their decision to quit militancy not only reflects the growing influence of state-led outreach and counter-insurgency efforts, but also signals a change in the ideological resolve of lower-level cadres.
The district administration has reiterated its commitment to assist the surrendered persons in rebuilding their lives.
As Chhattisgarh grapples with the complexities of insurgency, such reunification efforts offer hope for long-term peace and stability in the region.
