Former Spanish FA President louis rubiales Eggs were thrown at him, allegedly by his own uncle, during a book launch in Madrid.
Rubiales, 48, was presenting his new book “Matar a Rubiales”, which translates to “Killing Rubiales”, at the Espacio Eventize media room in the Spanish capital when a man in the audience began throwing eggs.
The first missed the mark and hit the wall, but then the second hit the Spaniard in the back, resulting in Rubiales sprinting into the audience to confront the aggressor, who he claims turned out to be a member of his family.
“He was my uncle, my real uncle, who is a troublemaker and always has been,” Rubiales said. radio marka,
“He came in with some eggs and threw them at me, but I didn’t know what he had in his hands, and when I saw him break the eggs, I thought he had a gun.”
The attacker has been arrested by Spanish police, who have not yet confirmed the family connection.
“We were lucky they stopped me,” Rubiales said. “I didn’t know what this guy had in his hand, I didn’t know if he had any weapons.
“I saw a pregnant woman, who is my friend Paco’s wife, with two little children, right where he was standing with something in his hand, and I thought about children.
“If I had caught him, we would have been in a different situation.”
Rubiales was at the center of a scandal in the fallout from Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup victory, in which he was seen kissing forward Jenny Hermoso without her consent at a victory celebration in Sydney.
In February, Spain’s High Court found Rubiales guilty of sexual assault and he was given a three-year ban by FIFA, as well as a fine. €10,800 (£9,206).
The incident sparked a nationwide uproar over sexism in Spanish society and women’s football, sparking the “Me Too” movement in the country.
Rubiales has consistently pledged his innocence after admitting wrongdoing and showing resistance to stepping down from his post at the Spanish FA, so has released this book to detail the scandal from his perspective.
