Kolkata, October 11 (IANS) A youth was arrested from the city’s port area on Saturday for raping a disabled woman. Police gave this information.
An FIR was lodged at Nadiyal police station under the port division of the city police on Friday night.
A Kolkata Police official said, the police immediately started investigating the case and finally arrested the accused person on Saturday morning.
“A written complaint on the matter was lodged at the Nadiyal police station on Friday midnight. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered. Without wasting any time, the investigation immediately began and within a few hours the accused person was arrested on Saturday morning,” the city police officer said.
He said that the accused person was arrested in front of his residence at around 6.30 in the morning.
However, the police refused to reveal the identity of the accused until he would be produced before a trial court in the city later.
The government lawyer will demand his police custody.
In another incident, a second-year MBBS student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped outside a private medical college in Durgapur in West Burdwan district on Friday night, police confirmed on Saturday.
The woman was allegedly pulled over to an isolated place and arrested.
A case has been registered against several people in connection with the incident, although no one has been arrested yet.
West Bengal was in the national headlines last year after several incidents of rape and murder in the state. In many cases the victims were minors.
The most famous case was the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor of the Government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August last year on the hospital premises.
