Digitally converted video of Ladakh DGP circulating on social media: Government fact check

Srinagar, September 30 (IANS) Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check, Government’s handle to bust fake news, said on Tuesday that a Deepfack video is being broadcast on social media, showing the Director General of Police (DGP) Ladakh, SS Singh, showing that climate activist Sonam Wangchok was arrested under the direction of Defense Minister.

To set the record straight, PIB has posted the original video of Ladakh DGP’s press conference in which she shared the details of the arrest of Sonam Wangchuk.

The PIB said in its fact check post on X, “A digital converted video of Director General of Police (DGP) Ladakh Dr. SD Singh is roaming on social media, claiming that Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on the instructions of the Indian Defense Minister without any evidence.

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) and was transferred to Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan, and Ladakh Police Chief, Sad Singh, told reporters that he was arrested on 24 September to incite violence in Leh city.

When the police opened fire on the rioters in Leh city, four people were killed and 70 others were injured.

Police said a similar number of security personnel were injured in the rioters by stone pelting, beating and uncontrolled mob.

The Leh administration said that the mob held a CRPF vehicle with the intention of burning the living CRPF Jawans sitting inside the vehicle.

The mob also fled with the police chief, in addition to torching other vehicles and breaking the DGP’s vehicle to the local BJP office and Leh Apex Body’s office.

The curfew was imposed in Leh on 24 September, and the same continues with staging relaxation.

The curfew was rested from 10 am to 2 pm on Tuesday. The MHA team arrived at Leh on 24 September and consulted the representatives of the Lapx Body to continue the ongoing dialogue between Apex Body and Home Affairs Ministry (MHA).

Leh Apex Needi President Thupston Chewang told a press conference on Monday that there would be no conversation with the MHA until the claim he claimed was addressed in Ladakh.

Sajjad Kargilli, a member of the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), also held a press conference blaming the Ladakh administration for the September 24 violence.

Kargilli said that the state and inclusion in the 6th schedule were ‘non-pervasive’ demands of the people of Ladakh.

Both Leh Apex body and KDA are agitating for these demands. The two representative bodies have also demanded unconditional release of Sonam Wangchuk and other youths detained after mob violence.

Meanwhile, the MHA issued a statement on Monday that the Government of India is firm on its commitment to continue dialogue with Leh Apex body and is the only way to address the issues raised by the dialogue representative body.
