New Delhi:

A 44-year-old man allegedly shot dead an assistant sub-inspector before committing suicide in northeast Delhi’s Nand Nagri area today, police said.

According to police, at around 11.40 am, PCR reported that multiple bullets were fired on the Meet Nagar flyover, resulting in the death of ASI Dinesh Sharma and injury to another person.

ASI Sharma, who was posted to the Delhi Police Special Branch, was riding his bike when he was shot. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Joy Tirkey said another victim, Amit Kumar (30), was riding a motorcycle when he was shot by the accused.

Police said Mukesh lived in Nandnagri area.

According to eyewitnesses, Mukesh shot Dinesh Sharma first and then shot Amit Kumar in the leg. He then boarded an autorickshaw and asked the driver to take him away from the scene.

“However, the driver refused and the accused fired at him but he managed to escape unhurt. When a crowd gathered, he shot himself,” the witness said.

“We recovered a 7.65mm pistol from the back seat of the car. Multiple rounds of live ammunition and blank ammunition were found at three different locations on the overpass,” he said.

The body has been sent for autopsy and the injured have been sent to hospital for treatment and are currently in critical condition, police said.

“We have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder against the accused under the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act and have started further investigation into the matter,” Mr. Tirkey said.
