A dense blanket of fog has engulfed northern India, disrupting travel and daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert due to dense fog conditions in Uttar Pradesh affecting land transport, trains and flights. It also issued a red warning of cold day at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh.

As a result, school timings have been revised in UP due to the severe cold wave and fog, with schedules for students from classes 1 to 12 adjusted in many districts.

Lucknow school timings

Due to dense fog and severe cold, Lucknow administration has changed the timings of schools. According to an official order, all schools from class 1 to class 12 of all education boards will now open only after 9 am. This instruction is applicable to all government basic schools, secondary schools, aided institutions and schools affiliated to all education boards running in the district. School administrations have been advised to strictly follow the changed timetable until further instructions.

“In view of Cold wave and dense fogn In view of the forecast of Lucknow District and Meteorological Department, it is ensured that classes for all schools from Class 1 to Class 12 (running under all boards) will start only after 9:00 am. “Strict compliance with this order must be ensured,” the official order read, India TV reported.

Similar measures have also been implemented in Rampur district, where cold wave conditions persist. Changes have been made in the school schedule of the district for classes 1 to 8. According to an official order issued by the District Basic Education Officer, all government-run, secondary, aided and board-recognized schools for classes 1 to 8 will now operate from 10:00 am to 3 pm.

Rampur district administration also tweeted updates on Twitter using the handle @RampurDm. It reads, “Due to the extreme cold wave, holiday is declared from 18.12.2025 to 20.12.2025 in all the council-run primary, upper primary/recognized/aided schools of the district up to class (1-8).”

Hybrid Learning Model in Noida

Noida schools have also changed their schedules in response to rising pollution levels, reports The Economic Times. Educational institutions use a hybrid model, in which:

Students up to class 5 can attend online classes.

Students above class 5 can attend online or offline classes.

Bareilly schools closed

from this perspective dense fog And in view of the severe cold, the Bareilly administration has announced closure of schools up to class 8 till December 20. As per the directive, due to extreme cold and poor visibility due to dense fog, all government and private schools in the district will remain closed till Class 8. According to Basic Education Officer Dr Vineeta, the decision was taken on the orders of District Magistrate Avinash Singh, PTI reported.

In Ghaziabad, giving priority to the health of students, schools have started online classes from pre-nursery to class V due to severe fog and cold waves. “Keeping in mind the adverse impact on the health of students… classes will be conducted as follows until further orders,” the order said, directing school heads to strictly comply.

Meanwhile, classes VI-IX will follow a hybrid format, and classes X and XII will continue to attend school as per their existing schedule.

Dense to very dense fog in UP

In its latest bulletin, the IMD predicted dense to very dense fog in parts of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. It said, “There is a possibility of cold day at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh.”

Dense fog conditions are likely to persist in some areas of Uttar Pradesh till December 20 as well as at isolated places on December 21. Meanwhile, cold day conditions are likely at isolated places in the state on December 19.
