New York:

Voters in suburban New York on Tuesday chose a Democrat to replace ousted Republican Rep. George Santos, U.S. television networks expect after President Joe Biden’s party spent heavily on television ads to flip seats in an election year. .

CNN and NBC News both called the election favorable for Tom Suozzi and predicted he would defeat Republican Mazi Pilip in the election Pilip, when the area was hit by a snowstorm.

Tom Suozzi is a veteran politician who previously held the seat before withdrawing from an unsuccessful bid for New York governor. He will serve out the remaining 11 months of his term in Santos’s scandal-plagued House of Representatives.

The victory weakened Republicans’ slim majority in the lower house of Congress.

“Thank God,” Tom Sozzi said in his victory speech in Woodbury after the game. A group of supporters began chanting his name, while protesters carrying Palestinian flags briefly stormed the stage chanting “genocide.”

“Despite all the lies…about Tom Sozzi being the godfather of the immigration crisis…despite the dirty tricks…we won.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, said Tom Sozzi’s victory was “good news for New York.”

The White House said Biden faces an uphill battle in the Republican-led House of Representatives to approve aid to key allies Ukraine and Israel, calling to congratulate Tom Souzi on his victory on Tuesday night.

Maz Pilip admitted in a speech in East Meadow: “We are warriors and I called my opponent and congratulated him,” she said.

Pre-election polls showed a tight race, with Democrats reportedly spending $14 million on advertising and Republicans $8 million.

Aggressive attack ads were used by both parties, with Republicans trying to paint Tom Sozzi as soft on illegal immigration and Democrats portraying Maz Pilip as someone who opposes abortion rights.

Immigration and abortion have become central political issues as the United States prepares for November’s presidential election, which will set up Biden’s rematch with Donald Trump in 2020.

An attack ad shows archival footage of Tom Suozzi apparently bragging about his efforts to keep immigration enforcement officers out of Nassau County, a congressional district when he was the area’s top elected official A large part of the area is located.

Anti-Pilip ads suggest she will seek a nationwide ban on abortion.

Heavy snow in New York’s 3rd Congressional District, which includes a small part of Queens and Long Island’s affluent Nassau North Shore, could prevent voters from casting ballots as authorities warned against driving.

The campaigns of both Tom Sozzi and Maz Pilip responded by offering call-in appointments for voters, while media reports said Republicans paid for plows to clear roads in areas sympathetic to the party.

Santos became the third U.S. lawmaker to be expelled since the Civil War, a denunciation previously reserved for traitors and convicted criminals.

He won a House seat in 2022, helping give Republicans a slim majority, but it was quickly discovered that his backstory was largely fabricated.

Santos, who denies criminal wrongdoing, allegedly spent the donations on Botox treatments and the OnlyFans porn website, as well as luxury goods and vacations in Italy, according to the committee investigating his conduct.

While the district went for Biden in 2020, Republicans picked up multiple seats in the district in 2022 and have taken effective local action to get out the vote.
