Delhi University today to vote for High-ST Student Union Election

New Delhi, September 18 (IANS) Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections will be held on Thursday, with more than 2.75 lakh students to vote, which is considered one of the largest student elections in the country.

The result will decide the leadership of the students’ body for the coming year.

According to the official notification, voting will be held in two phases – from 8:30 am to 1 pm for day classes and 3 pm to 7:30 pm for classes. The votes will be counted on Friday, September 19.

The competition for the presidency is mainly a three-way fight between the RSS-Buddhist Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Congress-backed National Students Union (NSUI) and SFI-ISA alliance supported by Left student groups.

Major contenders include Josalin Nandita Chaudhary of NSUI, postgraduate in Buddhist studies; Anjali of SFI-Aisa, a student for Indraprastha College; And Aryan Mann of ABVP, an MA Library Science Students. Each group has issued manifestos to focus more on reforms, inclusiveness and student welfare.

Prior to September 9, 2025, students enrolled in DU colleges or departments are eligible to vote till 5 pm. First year students can cast their vote by producing an ID issued by the government such as Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID or a valid fee receipt with a driving license if their college ID has not been released.

The second and third year students should carry their legitimate college identity cards.

To ensure law and order, more than 600 police personnel will be deployed throughout the campus, in which 160 officers will be equipped with cameras wearing bodies. In addition, CCTV cameras and drones will be used to monitor polling day activities.

The DUSU guidelines clearly state that the polling hours are fixed, but all the students reporting within the allotted time should be allowed to cast their votes.

Candidates and their supporters are prevented from indulging in acts of gross indiscipline, including any student, teaching or non-teaching staff within the University of Delhi.

The Delhi High Court has also imposed sanctions, banning the winning candidates from organizing winning rallies.

This has instructed Delhi Police, University Administration and Civil Officers to take all necessary measures to prevent unpleasant incidents during the elections.

The court further warned that if elections are not done satisfactorily, it can consider stopping the functioning of the office carrier.
