Delhi: Thousands come together to support special athletes, organize ‘Run for Inclusion’ initiative

New Delhi: In the country’s capital Delhi, there was an amazing display of unity and purpose. This is where the Run for Inclusion event takes place. The event was organized by Special Olympics India (SOB) and saw over 7,000 enthusiastic participants from 150 educational institutions and other organizations in the National Capital Region of Delhi.

The event is the launch ceremony for the upcoming Asia Pacific Special Olympics Boccia and Bowling competition, scheduled to be held on November 18, 2024 at Tyagaraja Sports Center, New Delhi. The competition was launched by Chief Guest Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, MPs Manoj Tiwari and Bansuri Swaraj, and Special Olympics Chairman Dr. Mallika Nadda. ) also attended the event.

Run for Inclusion was organized at Central Civil Service Centre, Chanakyapuri. On this occasion, people from all walks of life and top athletes unite through sports. More than 1,000 stunt athletes participated in the event, symbolizing the unity and collective strength of the sports community. The main message of the program is “Every One, Reach One”, promoting a spirit of unity and inclusion among all participants.

Former cricketers Atul Wasan, Nikhil Chopra and cricket coach Gursharan Singh were also present at the event. In addition, Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, expressed his views.

He said, “I am grateful to Special Olympics India and Mallika Nadda for organizing this amazing initiative where we work together to promote inclusivity and ensure that our specially-abled children integrate into society and find their rightful place. This is in line with I congratulate all the organizers of the inclusive run in perfect sync with our Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Fit India’ which will work towards making our society healthy and strong.”

On this historic occasion, Dr. Mallika Nadda, President, Special Olympics India, said: “I welcome all guests to Special Olympics India’s inclusive running program. Our motto should be inclusion and revolution. We will host the Asia Pacific Games, which include Boccia and bowling. This is the beginning of an important program for Delhi. I urge everyone to participate and support our special athletes.” Manoj Tiwari conveyed the message “We will succeed” through music on the occasion.

The inclusive run is the first milestone in the Asia Pacific Boccia and Bowling competition series, with more than 100 athletes from 12 countries taking part. This historic competition is exclusively for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), especially those aged 22 years and above, and is the first such international competition to be held in India. Special Olympics India has partnered with the Tenpin Federation of India to introduce bowling as a competitive sport for special athletes.
