New Delhi:

A man allegedly impersonated a police officer and deceived people by saying he could buy cars and mobile phones at extremely low prices at an auction in a Delhi court, officials said on Tuesday.

They said the man claimed to be a Crime Branch officer and took the money from the court before fleeing.

The accused, Ayub Khan, has been arrested, they added.

According to police, they received a PCR call on January 29 involving Deepak Chaudhary, who claimed to be a crime branch officer.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Manoj Kumar Meena said the complainant stated that he met Chaudhary while traveling on Tejas Rajdhani Express on January 2. Said Delhi court had some cars available for auction.

The officer further said that the accused told the complainant that he could buy a Toyota Innova Crysta for Rs 5.30 lakh and advised him to approach the Tis Hazari court to buy the car.

The DCP said that on January 29, when the complainant reached the court, Chaudhry asked him to pay Rs 2.50 lakh and took away his original Aadhar card and PAN card from which he purchased the car.

Chaudhry said he then ran away and turned off his phone.

In a similar incident on March 14, a man claiming to be crime branch police officer Deepak Chaudhary promised two Apple iPhones from the Tis Hazari Court auction mobile phone, cheating a man out of Rs 1.50 lakh.

Police said they examined CCTV footage and identified the man. We formed a team and arrested the accused from Vinod Nagar in the east.

“During questioning, the accused who identified himself as Deepak Chaudhary was questioned. He later revealed his original name as Ayub Khan,” the DCP said.

He said the Delhi police had confiscated forged identity cards, fake pants and shoes from his home.

During interrogation, Khan said he was unemployed and used to engage in such scams by posing as an inspector of the crime branch of Delhi Police.

“He loved a luxurious life and frequented bars and restaurants in Delhi and Mumbai. He had no regular source of livelihood, so he started cheating people by posing as a police officer,” the DCP added.
