New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) The Delhi High Court on Friday imposed a cost of Rs 20,000 on the Central government for suppressing facts in its review petition challenging the previous decision upholding the promotion of Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer and former NCB officer Sameer Gyandev Wankhede.
Dismissing the Centre’s review petition, a bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Madhu Jain condemned the conduct of the government and said, “We as a State expect the petitioner to disclose all the facts truthfully before filing the petition. For this, we dismiss the present review petition with a cost of Rs 20,000.”
The case arose out of a direction issued by the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in December 2024, asking the Central government to open the sealed envelope containing Wankhede’s promotion details. CAT had ruled that if the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recommends his name, he should be promoted to the post of Additional Commissioner from January 2021.
The Delhi High Court upheld the CAT order on August 28, following which the government filed a review petition claiming that departmental proceedings were initiated against Wankhede between the time the judgment was reserved on July 29 and its announcement on August 28.
In its judgment, a bench led by Justice Chawla said the Center failed to disclose an order passed by CAT in August 2025, which had stayed departmental proceedings against Wankhede. The Delhi High Court further said that the CAT order was issued before the review petition was filed, yet the Central Government decided not to bring it on record.
Wankhede came to public attention for his role in the 2021 Cordelia Cruz drug case, which reportedly also involved actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan.
Wankhede was later accused of misconduct and possessing a fake caste certificate. The Delhi High Court has now ordered the Center to implement the CAT order and grant promotion to Wankhede within four weeks if recommended by UPSC.
