The decision will provide relief to lakhs of old vehicles in the national capital as they will be able to re-register their vehicles in other states, news agency PTI quoted an official statement as saying.
“This move will primarily benefit owners of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years, allowing them to obtain NOC to re-register their vehicles in other states outside the Delhi-NCR region, irrespective of how long ago their vehicle registration had expired,” the statement said.
The move comes after the Rekha Gupta-led government decided to keep in abeyance the limited section of the “Guidelines for handling end-of-life vehicles in public places in Delhi, 2024”.
According to the statement, this section restricts NOC application only within one year of the expiry of registration of such vehicle.
Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said the government found that the one-year deadline for NOCs was “creating unexpected jams”, leaving lakhs of vehicles stranded in the city.
“These vehicles were neither being scrapped nor taken out, leading to potential pollution and congestion,” he said, according to PTI.
Singh further said that this decision will also help in reducing pollution concerns in Delhi.
“This decision will systematically remove a large number of old vehicles from Delhi’s roads, which will directly boost our efforts to improve air quality and reduce congestion in our city,” he said.
“By relaxing this norm, we are empowering our citizens to make a responsible choice,” Singh said.
