New Delhi, November 13 (IANS) In a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government approved the policy to provide compassionate employment to the dependents of the victims who lost their lives in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. An official gave this information on Thursday.
He said, “Our government is committed to ensuring that no eligible family faces further delays. By providing employment opportunities to the next generation, we aim to not only provide financial support but also restore the self-respect of these families.”
This decision of the Delhi government is aimed at economic rehabilitation of those Sikh families who have been waiting for justice and help for more than four decades.
Announcing details of the cabinet decision taken on Wednesday, CM Gupta said the new policy is a concrete step towards expediting the long-pending cases of employment assistance which were unresolved since the 2007 cabinet decision.
He said that this process has not been completed for the last 18 years due to various administrative reasons.
“To end this long delay, the government has now introduced a clear, structured and time-bound policy to ensure that eligible families receive employment assistance immediately and no rightful claimant is deprived,” he said.
According to the Chief Minister, a key feature of the new policy is that the dependents of the victims who are now above 50 years of age and unable to take employment will have the option to nominate a member of the next generation, such as son, daughter, daughter-in-law or son-in-law, for the job.
This provision ensures that the benefits of employment actually reach the family and the intended purpose of the assistance is effectively achieved.
“This clause has been introduced keeping in mind the fact that many eligible dependents have now become elderly,” he said.
The Chief Minister said that necessary relaxation in age and educational qualification has also been included in the policy.
All provisions will comply with the directions of the Hon’ble Delhi High Court and the prescribed legal framework. Additionally, a transparent and well-defined mechanism for verification, grievance redressal and departmental allocation has been put in place to ensure that the process of appointments is fair, accountable and efficient, he said.
The Chief Minister emphasized that this decision reflects the deep sympathy of the Delhi Government towards the families of the victims and its unwavering commitment towards their dignity, justice and economic rehabilitation.
