New Delhi, Oct 21 (IANS) The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is preparing to install 30 mist spray systems along Shanti Path and Africa Avenue, vice-chairman Kuljit Singh Chahal said on Tuesday while sharing the plan to control air pollution.
“NDMC plans to install these systems in two phases – the first phase will cover 10 major roads, and the second will cover 14 additional roads,” Chahal said. He assured that the civic agency is taking intensive measures to control air pollution.
The Vice President said, he said that manpower and machinery are working round the clock in the fight against air pollution.
Chahal also shared details of the use of anti-smog guns as part of the action plan being implemented to tackle the deteriorating air quality in Delhi, an official statement said.
He said Delhi-NCR’s AQI remained in the “very poor” category on Tuesday, with the average AQI of Delhi recorded at 346 at 5.30 am, putting most of the area in the red zone.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, NDMC has launched a comprehensive pollution control campaign focusing on dust suppression, smog reduction, greenery and public participation, the official statement said.
Major initiatives of NDMC to curb air pollution include mechanical road sweeping (MRS), deployment of anti-smog guns and installation of fog spray systems.
Chahal said NDMC operates 4 MRS machines in two shifts every day to clean about 220-230 km of roads.
He said that five new CNG run MRS are being purchased for better cleaning of roads and streets.
He said procurement of 4 battery operated MRS for lane-by-lane cleaning and 4 small ride-on sweepers for footpath and parking areas is also underway.
Chahal said eight mobile anti-smog guns (ASGs) are deployed daily covering 320-340 km of NDMC roads.
Ten ASGs have been installed at private high-rise buildings and 3 ASGs at NDMC’s own buildings.
Seven additional ASGs are being procured for further installation at NDMC buildings; Tenders have been invited.
Highlighting the use of mist spray system, he said that the system installed at a height of 5 to 6 meters on electric poles has been introduced on trial basis.
“Fifteen mist spray units have been installed on Lodhi Road to control local dust pollution. About 1,323 pillars covering 29.5 km road length have been identified for system installation,” he said.
He said washing of trees, washing of footpaths using pressure jet machines and greenery and tree plantation are also part of the steps being taken by NDMC to tackle pollution.
“There are 22 markets in the NDMC area. NDMC has started night cleaning of footpaths in three markets, Connaught Place, Khan Market and Sarojini Nagar,” he said.
Chahal said that NDMC has deployed three pressure jetting machines and one rag picking machine to clean the footpaths of these markets.
NDMC also proposes to purchase footpath cleaning, 10 water sprinklers, 5 more pressure jetting machines, 9 more garbage picking machines and 10 floor cleaner machines for all 22 markets in the coming year to reduce dust pollution in the area.
