New Delhi, November 13 (IANS) After the explosion near the Red Fort, investigating agencies are searching for another vehicle, a Maruti Brezza, on Thursday. Officials are also investigating why the terror module was using multiple cars.
An i20 car exploded near the Red Fort, while an Eco Sport belonging to Dr Omar Mohammed was reported missing and later found in Faridabad. Now the search is on for the third vehicle, Brezza.
Sources said the module was planning a series of car bombings, but their plan unraveled before they could carry out further attacks.
Meanwhile, a new CCTV footage has emerged showing Dr Omar Mohammed driving an i20 car in Connaught Place, the heart of Delhi, to the Red Fort area, where the blast took place, about five hours ago.
According to police sources, Omar was seen driving a car loaded with explosives on the Outer Circle of Connaught Place at around 2.05 pm, before heading towards Mayur Vihar and eventually the Red Fort area.
According to Delhi Police sources, the DNA test results conclusively established Umar’s identity. His DNA samples matched 100 percent with the DNA samples of his mother and brother, leaving no doubt that he was present inside the vehicle at the time of the explosion. DNA was extracted from bone fragments, teeth and pieces of clothing recovered from the mangled remains of the car.
The powerful blast occurred at around 6.52 pm on November 10, sending shock waves across the national capital and prompting an immediate security alert. The blast occurred close to one of India’s most iconic sites, raising serious concerns about a breach of the high security zone around the Red Fort.
Following the incident, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officially took over the investigation from the Delhi Police Special Cell. NIA officials have cordoned off the area and are conducting a detailed forensic examination of the debris, including explosive remains, vehicle components and digital evidence, to unearth the entire network behind the attack.
On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed deep grief over the deaths and directed to investigate the incident with “utmost urgency” to quickly identify all the “perpetrators” and “sponsors” and bring them to justice.
The Cabinet observed a two-minute silence in honor of the innocent people killed and called the November 10 incident “a heinous terrorist incident perpetrated by anti-national forces”.
