Chennai: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression formed over the South Andaman Sea on Saturday has intensified further and is persisting over the same area. Weather officials on Monday said the system was showing clear signs of strengthening, with further development likely over the next two days.
The IMD forecast suggests that another low pressure area is expected to develop over south-east Bay of Bengal on Monday.
The system is likely to move west-northwestwards and consolidate into a well-marked low pressure area before further intensifying into a depression. Over the next 48 hours, it is expected to gain additional strength and develop into a cyclonic storm, which could potentially affect the weather conditions along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
Meanwhile, continuous heavy rains in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu have forced the authorities to declare holiday in educational institutions. Schools and colleges will remain closed today in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts due to incessant rain and waterlogging in many areas.
The impact of rain has extended beyond the southern region, with district administrations in Nagapattinam, Karur, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvarur, Sivagangai, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi and Thoothukudi also declaring holiday in schools today.
Officials said the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students as many areas faced floods, poor visibility and disruption in road connectivity.
In the Union Territory of Puducherry and its enclave Karaikal, the government has declared a holiday for both schools and colleges as a precautionary measure.
As rainfall intensified overnight in coastal areas, authorities have directed institutions to remain closed to avoid inconvenience and possible dangers to students traveling to campuses.
Disaster management teams in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are closely monitoring the developing weather system, especially as the depression in the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and the district administration has been asked to remain on alert for possible flooding or local landslides.
With twin weather systems developing simultaneously over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, officials expect humid conditions to persist over the southern and delta districts for the next few days. Residents have been urged to keep updated with official advice as the situation evolves.
