New Delhi:
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday fielded its assembly candidates through polls in several states, fielding six ineligible MLAs from the Himachal Pradesh Assembly just days after joining the party after leaving the Congress.
Several Gujarat MLAs, including four Congress MPs who recently joined the BJP, have also resigned from the party to contest by-elections.
In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP nominated Sudhir Sharma (Dharamshala), Ravi Thakur (Lahul and Spiti), Rajinder Rana (Sujan Phule), Inder Dutt Lakhanpal (Balsal), Chetaniya Sharma (Gagaret) and Devinder Kumar Bhutto (Kutlhar) for candidate..
Six former Congress MLAs were disqualified for flouting the party whip and voting for the BJP candidate in the Union Assembly polls, handing an embarrassing defeat to the ruling Congress party in the state.
In Gujarat, the BJP’s candidates in five seats through by-elections include Arjun Modhvadiya, Chatursinh Chavda and Arvind Ladani.
The BJP has also fielded its by-election candidates for two seats in West Bengal and one seat in Karnataka, as well as nine assembly seats in Sikkim.
The Sikkim assembly elections are held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls and the BJP recently broke its alliance with the state’s ruling party, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.
