New Delhi, October 20 (IANS) Mafia don Dawood Ibrahim is enjoying the hospitality offered by Pakistan, but there are fears of re-emergence of the underworld in India.

The Dawood Ibrahim syndicate is in dire need of attention, and this has led to them facing increased extortion threats in various parts of the country.

Dawood’s fear had subsided to a great extent, and this led to a calm down of operations, especially in Maharashtra, the syndicate’s main hub.

Intelligence Bureau officials say that D-Gang had thrived on fear, but now with that factor gone, the syndicate is finding it difficult to operate.

Dawood Ibrahim, who flourished in the drug trade, is feeling the pinch after the Indian government launched an all-out war against the drug mafia. There have been several incidents in recent months and D-Gang is facing huge losses.

Police officials investigating gang-related cases say that as the number of drug busts has increased significantly, the grip of the Dawood network is weakening.

As a result, there has been a huge decline in the number of recruitments. The attractiveness of joining the underworld has greatly diminished and this is causing losses to Dawood and his network. To operate seamlessly in India, the gang needs more members who can carry out the drug trade. There is an acute shortage of manpower and this is hampering operations on a large scale.

Officials say that Dawood gang no longer looks powerful. The dominance in police, political and Bollywood circles is waning. This is largely linked to the fact that the operations the gang has been running in recent times have been winding down.

Therefore, Dawood and his associates in Pakistan decided to re-strategize. It was decided to slow down the drug business temporarily until they could bring many more people on board. Now the idea is to run kidnapping and extortion racket. This will not only bring wealth, but will also bring back the fear of the underworld.

The gang has decided to engage in high-profile kidnappings and then demand ransom.

Apart from this, it was also decided to set up extortion cells in different parts of the country and trace the money.

Officials say it’s not so much about the money. D-Gang has enough money, but he doesn’t feel like there is enough fear. It wants to bring back the days when the underworld was thriving in the 1980s. Many people were influenced by the way the underworld worked at that time. The fact that fear could be created in the minds of people was a warning to youths to get involved in the underworld.

Therefore, it was decided by the Karachi-based D-Gang to set up as many extortion cells as possible across the country. While setting up these cells, the biggest focus of the gang will be in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Mumbai Crime Branch is keeping an eye on these cells. Recently, the Crime Branch had busted a gang which was being run on the instructions of Dawood Ibrahim. This cell was being handled by Sajid Electricwala and his associate Shabbir Siddiqui. Last week also a case came to light where D-Gang had demanded Rs 5 crore from cricketer Rinku Singh. The cricketer’s team is continuously receiving threats and demands for extortion are being made.

In another case, Zeeshan Siddiqui, son of slain NCP leader Baba Siddiqui, had received a ransom threat of Rs 10 crore. Two accused, Mohammed Dilshad and Mohammed David, were arrested in Trinidad and Tobago with the help of Interpol. The matter was also related to Dawood network.

These increasing incidents are a clear indication that Dawood Ibrahim wants to bring the underworld back in India. To do this, he is setting up extortion cells with the intention of creating fear and panic in the minds of people.
