David Beckham urges Manchester United flop to prove they are ‘motivated’ football news

David Beckham has urged Manchester United’s flopping players to prove they are motivated to play for the crisis-hit club. Former United star Beckham was in Manchester on Thursday to attend the premiere of a new documentary about the club’s 1999 treble-winning team. Beckham was a key figure in the United team that won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup under legendary boss Alex Ferguson. Now the former England captain’s Studio 99 company has taken a role in the production of the three-part series ’99’, which launches on May 17.

Twenty-five years after his role in that epic treble win, Beckham addressed the current malaise at Old Trafford.

United manager Eric ten Hag is struggling to avoid the sack with his team eighth in the Premier League after an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday.

Beckham believes the players should take their share of the blame, saying: “You would hope the manager wouldn’t have to do too much.

“I think that’s the whole point of being a Manchester United player and playing in these big games – you’ve got to be motivated.”

Ten Hague’s second season in charge could be barely salvaged if United beat arch-rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

And Beckham hopes United’s current side can prove they deserve a long-term future at the club by shining at Wembley as they look to avenge last season’s defeat to City in the final.

“When you’re a professional footballer and you’re doing what you love and you’re at a club you love, when you’re playing in any game, whether it’s a regular season game or whether it’s an F.A. “Be it a cup final, that should be enough motivation for your rivals,” he said.

“And, if it’s not, you’re on the wrong team and playing the wrong game. We went into every game, whether it was youth cup games, friendly games, the off-season or a European Cup final, with the same mentality and With the same inspiration.

“We all know that Eric is a very capable manager and a good manager and he has the right intentions.”

Beckham, a member of United’s famous ‘Class of 92’, which also included Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt, won six Premier League titles, a Champions League and numerous other honors during his 11 years before joining Real Madrid .

The 49-year-old, a United fan since childhood, admits he has become demoralized by the club’s problems since their last Premier League title in Ferguson’s final season in 2013.

“Obviously it’s been a tough five, 10, 15 years at United and we all know that, but when the boss left, (Roy) Keane left, Giggs (Ryan Giggs) left, Gary (Neville) left… It was never easy,” she said.

“With all these important players and personalities and characters leaving United, it was always going to be a difficult time.

“We want boys – from this documentary – to feel inspired to succeed.”
