Darjeeling Landslides: Death toll increases to 24, CM announced a compensation of ₹ 5 lakh for the families of the victims

Ankita Jain, 06/10/202506/10/2025
The toll of death in a landslide in Darjeeling district of West Bengal increased to 24. Many people were missing, and thousands of tourists were stranded at the hill station, as disaster management personnel continued the rescue operation on Monday (October 6).

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a compensation of ₹ 5 lakh for the families of the victims.

North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha told PTI, “The situation is very challenging. Many people are still missing, and are likely to go over the toll. Constant rainfall is hindering the rescue operations.”

The district received more than 300 mm of rainfall in just 12 hours, which triggered the landslide and destroyed the Darjeeling Hills and Doors region in the foothills.

Manoj Rai, a villager affected by the landslide in Darjeeling, said, “My house has a pile of mud and stones. I request the government to build a house for us.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is going to visit the affected areas later during the day.

An official said that the district administration has set up relief camps in coordination with Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and local NGOs.

“Food, blankets, medicines and drinking water are being provided to all displaced families,” he said.

GTA executive member Arun Sigchi told Annie, “It was about 200 mm very heavy rainfall. Mirik has been 11 casualties. A total of 18 casualties have been officially reported in Darjeeling. Dukhiya Bridge has been completely damaged. National Disaster.
