Denmark provides U.S. troops to eastern region Atlantic Danish government officials confirmed on Tuesday that they had received support for intercepting an oil tanker last week for violating U.S. sanctions.
The official was not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive issue and spoke on condition of anonymity, declining to provide details about the content of the support.
But Denmark’s admission of support for the U.S. action comes amid tensions between NATO allies as president Donald Trump Repeated calls for U.S. takeover GreenlandDenmark’s strategic Arctic territory. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to speak on Wednesday washington with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rock Rasmussen discussed the matter with his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt.
Officials in Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly said the island is not for sale and expressed disappointment that Trump said he would not rule out using force to seize the territory.
The U.S. interception in the Atlantic ended a week-long manhunt for the tanker that began in the Caribbean when the U.S. imposed a blockade on Venezuelan waters aimed at capturing sanctioned vessels entering and exiting the South American country.
The White House and Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
