creator of child line – a counseling service that has helped millions of children for almost three decades – Dame Esther has dedicated much of her life to safeguarding young people and has used her television career to amplify their voices.
She is now backing this publication’s appeal to fund a new service which will reach the 70,000 children who go missing in the UK each year.
Dame Esther said: “Many young people who suffer abuse do not feel they can ask for help and be listened to, at a time when they are scared, alone and vulnerable.
“This new service means there is finally a way to enable them to seek help with confidence and hope. Going missing is a crisis – a crucial moment to intervene and help young people on their own terms.”

Launch of Dame Esther child line After his long running BBC show This is life!which he produced and presented from 1973 to 1994, airing a special episode titled “Childwatch”. It invited viewers to participate in a survey asking whether they had experienced childhood abuse.
After the programme, the producers opened a 48-hour helpline for children to call and ask for help. More than 50,000 calls were received on the first night – the majority of which were from children who were victims of sexual abuse.
in his book tears are flowingDame Esther wrote: “I will never forget going into my office the morning after the program to meet the social workers who were running the helpline. I knew in that moment that working to help protect abused children was more important than any previous job I had done.
“As I heard about these hidden children, all guarding a terrible secret, I wanted so passionately to be able to help them. It was the most important cause I ever worked for.”
Around 600 children are going missing every day in Britain. Independent The aim is to raise £165,000 to help launch secure call – A free new service to provide confidential support, guidance and a path to safety for children in crisis.
Dame Esther, who has also been a patron of several children’s advocacy charities, was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2015 New Year Honors list. She received the honor for her services to children and older people through her charities Childline and The Silver Line, which provides support for older people.
“It has been an honor to be alongside missing people and the young people they have helped over many years as they develop this new service. I’m thrilled Independent Supporting such an important cause,” she said.
