Chennai, Oct 27 (IANS) With Cyclone Montha forming over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an orange alert for four northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu – Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Ranipet, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by squall and gusty winds.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, the system, which has developed from a deep depression over south-east Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify further and move north-westwards in the next 24 hours.
Under its influence, weather conditions are likely to deteriorate over the northern coastal region of Tamil Nadu, especially in and around Chennai region.
“Orange alert has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Ranipet districts, indicating possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places,” the IMD said in a statement.
The department also said that many parts of the city and suburbs may receive moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning today, with locally intense rainfall in some areas.
For Tuesday, the IMD forecast includes orange alert for Tiruvallur district and yellow alert for Ranipet, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts, indicating the possibility of widespread rainfall activity continuing.
Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions off the Tamil Nadu and South Andhra coasts.
The weather office said the sky over Chennai and surrounding areas is expected to be generally cloudy with isolated rain and thundershowers. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to be around 25 degrees.
Due to the possibility of heavy rain, city officials have increased precautionary measures. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has prepared motor pumps in flood-prone areas, and the Public Works Department (PWD) has been directed to monitor water discharge levels in major reservoirs and waterways.
With the northeast monsoon strengthening, officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and report incidents of waterlogging through helpline numbers.
