Chennai, October 26 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that a deep depression over south-east Bay of Bengal is gradually intensifying and it is likely to turn into cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ by Monday morning.
The system, which is currently moving north-westwards at a speed of about 8 kilometers per hour, is likely to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to many coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next two days.
In its latest bulletin, the IMD said the deep depression that formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal was centered about 800 km east-southeast of Chennai at 5.30 am on Sunday.
It is expected that by the early hours of Monday it will turn into a cyclonic storm over the south-west and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists predict that the system will continue to move in a north-northwest direction, gradually intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm by Monday night or early Tuesday.
It is expected to cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada as a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday evening or night.
During its progress, wind speed is likely to reach 90-100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph along Andhra and North Tamil Nadu coasts.
The IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea and advised those already in the sea to return to the coast immediately due to the danger of strong waves and strong winds.
Under the influence of the system, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ranipet districts and Puducherry on Sunday.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for these areas, indicating the possibility of intense rainfall with strong winds. Heavy rain is expected in Ranipet, Tiruvallur and Chennai districts on Monday, while Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Vellore and Puducherry may also receive moderate to heavy rain.
By Tuesday, rain activity is likely to move northwards, with heavy rains expected over Ranipet and Tiruvallur districts.
The district administration has been put on high alert, and disaster management teams have been asked to be prepared to deal with any emergency arising from heavy rainfall, floods or strong winds as the system intensifies in the next 48 hours.
