Bhubaneswar, October 28 (IANS) Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday said the severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ has so far not made any major impact in the districts of Odisha that are likely to be affected by the system.
Briefing the media after visiting the control room of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) at Rajiv Bhawan here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said, “According to reports, it appears that Cyclone Montha has so far not had any major impact in the eight districts that were expected to be affected when it made landfall. Barring a few areas like Gajapati and Ganjam, which received heavy rainfall of about 115 mm today, no heavy rain or sizzle was seen in any other part of the state.” No winds reported.”
He further said that the cyclone is likely to pass through Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and other districts of Odisha on Wednesday, and all departments of the state government are on full alert and working in close coordination to manage the impact of the cyclone, whether the impact is minor or severe.
CM Mazahi also said that the process of the severe cyclonic storm Montha hitting the Andhra coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada is still going on.
However, Malkangiri district, which was earlier expected to be the worst affected, has not yet been hit by the severe cyclonic storm.
He further said that so far 17,817 people have been evacuated to safe places from sensitive areas of eight districts in the southern part of the state.
Although the government had planned to evacuate more people if necessary, Chief Minister Majhi said that, given the current impact of the cyclone, further evacuations may not be necessary.
He said at least 2,198 pregnant women have been shifted to nearby health centres, while 651 more will be shifted soon.
The Chief Minister said that he has discussed with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav regarding the resumption of train services that were canceled due to the current situation.
He reiterated the state government’s focus on ensuring zero casualties during Cyclone Montha.
