Chennai, Oct 28 (IANS) As the northeast monsoon intensifies in Tamil Nadu, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has stepped up its preparations to prevent rain-related hardships and disease outbreak in the city.

The civic body has so far set up 215 relief centers across Chennai to provide immediate assistance to residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Each relief center is equipped with essential facilities like food, sanitation and clean drinking water facilities.

A network of 106 central kitchens has been set up to ensure uninterrupted food supply. More than four lakh residents of vulnerable areas were provided three meals a day during this period, underscoring the scale of the civilian response.

To prevent the spread of seasonal and waterborne infections during monsoon, the Corporation organized 574 special medical camps, including 408 general health camps and 116 mobile camps, reaching 24,146 beneficiaries. These camps focused on fever screening, vector control awareness and early medical intervention for monsoon-related diseases.

On the infrastructure front, GCC has prepared over 2,000 motor pumps of various capacities to pump out rainwater from submerged areas. 457 trained tree surgeons have been deployed to deal with emergencies caused by high winds and falling trees.

The civic body is also maintaining 22 major road tunnels round the clock to prevent water logging and ensure smooth traffic flow during heavy rains. A total of 22,000 personnel, including engineers, sanitation workers and field staff, have been deployed for flood-prevention and relief operations. Additionally, 2,149 field staff of Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) are ready to address drainage blockages and sewage overflows.

The GCC has urged residents to immediately report rain-related damages, floods or emergencies through the toll-free helpline 1913.

Officials said complaints received through social media platforms are also being actively monitored and actioned.

With more rains likely to lash the city in the coming days, the civil administration’s coordinated measures – relief operations, public health initiatives and infrastructure preparations – are aimed at minimizing disruption and protecting citizens during the monsoon season.
